Swimming Lesson

The still is from the video is titled Swimming Lesson (can be seen from link below). This is about a woman learning to swim. The lessons become a matter of self-preservation when the need to understand conflicts with keeping afloat. The swimmer receives her lessons in 2 of the 5 Colonial languages (Spanish, Portuguese, French, Dutch, and English). By using the Colonial languages the reading of the video is contextual. The Swimming Lesson investigates the relationship between learning and self-preservation. By projecting the image larger than life, the swimmer’s experience becomes monumental. The swimmer’s fear of the water contrasts with the seductive visual qualities of the water. Her desire to learn how to swim is tempered by her discomfort. At the core, this work is about survival.
